1st XI Match Report - 27th June 2015

County Division 4 North – Steeple Langford 1st XI v Whitchurch 1st XI

Steeple Langford 1st XI suffered their first defeat of the season going down by 40 runs away at Whitchurch after a much below par performance. It is also a day that skipper Andy Bennett will want to quickly forget playing at his old club, as on winning the toss he asked the home team to bat which later proved to be the wrong decision. He then proceeded to drop opener Williams in the slips off the first ball of the match and then again in the third over, both times off the bowling of a non-too-pleased Nick Partridge. At the other end Gary Smith removed the other opener early with the score on 9. This brought Bevan to the crease and him and Williams then put on 169 for the second wicket before Partridge, in his second spell, removed Bevan for a fine 66. Williams went on to punish his good ‘friend’ Bennett’s drops by hitting an excellent but risky 102 before Partridge finally removed him. After that wickets fell regularly with Treble (24*) the only other home batsman to reach double figures and the innings finished on 241 for 8. Partridge once again bowled excellently with movement and pace to finish with 4 for 46 and Chris Mundy took 3 for 47. In reply, Langford got off to a solid start with an opening stand of 34 but then lost 3 quick wickets to leave them at 48 for 3, opener Adi Hughes hitting 24. After that all of the middle order got themselves in before then getting themselves out in the run chase – Chris Mundy (37), Gary Smith (27), Tom Dennis (22) and Tom Bennett (21) the main run-getters. In the end the innings petered out to leave the away side short by 40 runs and ending on 201-9. The only positives from the day were that Steeple Langford remain top of the league and with Williams from Whitchurch doing the catering at Langford’s end of season bash, no doubt he will offer a substantial discount due to the generosity of the away team skipper.
