1st XI match report Sat 9th May

County Div 4 North IBM Hursley v SLCC

Steeple Langford 1st XI started their County Division 4 North campaign with a convincing 91 run win away to IBM Hursley. Put into bat on a green and soft wicket, Langford found the going hard against the home bowling attack and were soon at 24 for 2. Skipper Andy Bennett and Chris Mundy steadied the ship with a cautious 35 run partnership before Bennett was trapped LBW for a hard-grafted 22. This brought Tom Dennis to the crease who straight away took the attack to the bowling, hitting his first ball for 6. Together, he and Mundy despatched the ball to all parts of the ground, putting on a fine 130 run stand before Dennis departed for an excellent 72 with a couple of overs left. Langford lost a couple more wickets in the hunt for runs, ending on a creditable 207 for 6 with Mundy finishing on a fine unbeaten 65. In reply, the home side had no answer to the Langford bowling and fielding with all 5 bowlers used getting movement both in the air and off the drying wicket. Nick Partridge bowled aggressively and with pace to end up with 2 for 24 off his 10 overs, Luke Stephens bowled with great control and his in-swingers earned him figures of 3 for 24 from his 10, Tom Bennett after an inconsistent first couple of overs got his flight and length right and at times with prodigious turn he picked up 3 for 33 from his 10. This left Chris Mundy to finish off the tail taking 2 for 11 and IBM closed on 116 all out. Credit also to the fielders who backed up the bowlers with a very tidy performance.
