1st XI Match Report - 6th June 2015

County Division 4 North – Oakley v Steeple Langford 1st XI

Steeple Langford 1st XI made it 5 wins from 5 after a hard-earned 34 run win away at Oakley. On winning the toss, skipper Andy Bennett decided to bat on a hard track that looked full of runs. However, it was soon obvious that batting would be far from easy with the new ball consistently keeping low and the away side were soon 26 for 2 losing both openers cheaply. Adam McNeilly steadied things for a while, scoring 20 before Langford lost 2 more wickets leaving them on a precarious 68 for 4 at the half-way stage of their innings. However, this brought together the in-form Chris Mundy and Martin Grearson who put on 54 before Grearson fell for an aggressive 37. Mundy continued to patiently accrue runs before finally falling for an excellent 50, his third consecutive half-century, and after a late flurry the innings closed on a competitive 172 all out in the last over. In reply Oakley also lost 2 early wickets, with Nick Partridge again bowling with pace, swing and control, before Savage (26) and Bright held things together with a stand of 56. However, with Langford bowling and fielding tightly, even though not taking wickets they ensured the run rate kept creeping up with the home side having to start taking risks to stand any chance of winning the match. Skipper Bennett brought himself on to try and make a breakthrough and duly obliged in his second over, removing Savage who appeared to have taken root at the wicket!! With Partridge and Mundy bowling well at the other end the pressure ended up being too much for Oakley who capitulated to end up being dismissed for 138 in the penultimate over, Bright scoring a grafting 53. Partridge finished with a fine 2 for 19 from his 10 overs, Mundy 2 for 28 and Bennett an excellent return of 5 for 27 from 9 overs.
