Steeple Langford 1st XI v South Newton

Steeple Langford 1sts continued their good form with a convincing 9 wicket local derby home win against a much weakened South Newton. On winning the toss, Langford skipper Andy Bennett asked the away team to bat first and they struggled against the movement of opening bowlers Gary Smith and Nick Partridge. Wickets fell at regular intervals and South Newton found themselves at 88 for 4 after 29 overs with Smith taking 2 for 27 from his 10 and only opener Rob Crossley offering any resistance with the bat. Crossley was then dismissed for a hard-grafted 34 and there then followed a collapse of huge proportions as the last 6 wickets fell for only 8 runs to leave Newton on 96 all out in the 32nd over. All the bowlers took wickets with Luke Stephens (2 for 8) and Tom Bennett (2 for 20) the pick. Tea was taken between innings and then the Steeple Langford opening batsmen Martin Grearson and Tom Bennett continued to feast, showing they were in no mood to hang around and delay getting in the bar. They punished any bowling that was slightly loose, hitting the ball to all parts of the ground, and had cruised to 90 in the 9th over before Bennett holed out for a fine 37. Grearson managed to get to his half century just before the required total was reached in only the 11th over with the match finishing before 5pm.
