Steeple Langford 1st XI v Overton 1st XI

Steeple Langford 1sts continued their good form with a comfortable 33 run home win over Overton. On a hot afternoon and with the Langford ground in it’s usual cracking condition, skipper Andy Bennett had no hesitation in taking first knock on winning the toss. The openers were once again quickly out of the blocks before the first wicket fell on 24 and then on 56, Simon Ford (30) was given out to a controversial catch on/over the boundary with the behaviour of the away team fielders leaving a lot to be desired. However, this spurred Langford on and Adam (Fovant Fly) McNeilly (43) looked in great form before being dismissed by an excellent one handed catch in the covers. Chris Mundy (42) and Nick Partridge (29) then put on 56 and decent stands then followed throughout the innings with Tom Dennis (28), Gary Smith (33) and Rich Lidster (18) all making useful contributions. The innings finally closed on a respectable 258 for 9, although this was probably 30 or 40 runs short of what they looked like getting at one point. However, with the track still a belter and the outfield lightning fast, Langford knew this game was far from won and would have to bowl and field tightly. Opening bowlers Mundy and Partridge obliged leaving the visitors on 20 for 2 after 10, Partridge in particular bowling a great line with pace and taking 2 for 8 from his first 5 over spell. Overton knew they needed to put bat to ball and Watts (37) and Johnson (67) did so to give them a sniff of a chance, although both gave numerous chances that weren’t taken – particularly off a disgruntled Tom Bennett who had 5 catches put down off his bowling in 2 overs. Once these 2 batsmen were eventually dismissed, only Sims (37) looked comfortable against Adam Dhanji (2 for 52), Andy Bennett (2 for 31 from 9) and the returning Partridge who ended with an excellent 4 for 33 from his 10 – the innings ending on 225 all out to give Steeple Langford maximum points.
