2nd XI Match Report 4th June 2016

Ringwood v Steeple Langford 2nd XI

Langford seconds welcomed back three players who had been covering absences in the first team for the last few weeks so went into the match against Ringwood with confidence of being able to secure their first win of the season.  Unfortunately this was not to be.

Winning the toss and electing to field first Langford kept things tight for the first 20 overs with Chris Miles (2 for 19) and Raj Kumar (0 for 30) restricting the score to 52 for 2 at the half way mark.  This was mainly thanks to a steepling catch in the deep by Rob Wheatley to remove Ringwood’s dangerous looking No 3 before he could do too much damage.  The rewards for the bowlers should however have been greater as yet again catches went down.  After drinks there was a comical run out whereby a good looking cover drive held up in the three inch long outfield grass allowing Chris Miles to pounce and return to the keeper with the batsman well short of a second run.  Darren Harvey took 2 for 32 off 7 overs but generally the batsmen got on top and ended on 169 for 5.  Again Langford’s bowling lacked a true cutting edge but at only 4 an over it was still a score that should have been chased down.

After tea Adie Hughes and Raj Kumar opened the batting and looked fairly well set until Kumar was the first wicket down in the 8th over.  Hughes continued to grind and pushed the score on with Rob Wheatley but when these two were removed in short succession there seemed an air of inevitability that the rest of the team would enjoy the long walk to the crease shortly followed by the even longer walk back again.  Langford’s innings finished on only 62 all out with only one player reaching double figures.  Praise must go to the Ringwood bowlers who knowing their home pitch took the pace off the ball early in the innings, bowled the ball in the right place with a bit of movement and left the rest to the Langford batsmen.  As usual a high proportion of the wickets were self-inflicted.
