FRIENDLY – STEEPLE LANGFORD V SOUTH WILTS III

22 April 2017

Captain Chris Miles won the toss and opted to bat first. Adam McNeilly (13) and Nick Partridge (25) opened confidently finding the boundary regularly before both falling in quick succession. A mini collapse followed leaving Langford on 68 for 4 in the 18th over before Gary Smith took control in impressive style. His 106 not out coupled with a good 47 from ‘extras’ helped Langford to a total of 226 for 8 from the 40 overs.

In response South Wilts batted patiently but slowly fell behind the asking rate reaching 111 for 2 by the 25th over. However, with wickets in hand it could still have been a tight game. That soon changed with the introduction of Tom Bennett (4 for 7) and Nathan Hill (3 for 15) who helped ensure that South Wilts were eventually all out for 163 in the 36th over. Eight bowlers were used in total allowing everyone to get rid of a few cobwebs before the season starts in earnest.

FRIENDLY – KILMINGTON V STEEPLE LANGFORD

29 April 2017

A team comprising 3 first team, 5 second team and 3 colts travelled to Kilmington for the final pre-season friendly and batted first on a rock hard wicket. A terrible start led to a score of 12 for 3 at the end of the fifth over leaving Langford at risk of a heavy beating. Chris Mundy (82) led the fight back although never truly looked at ease throughout his knock. Tony Gipson (32) provided excellent support allowing a reasonable total of 172 all out to eventually be posted.

In response Chris Miles and Luke Stephens kept the openers quiet restricting the score to just two an over for the first 12 overs but without being able to make the breakthrough. That had to wait until the 23rd over with the score on 90. A few more wickets followed but in reality Kilmington paced their innings very well hitting the winning run off the fourth ball of the final over. As with the previous week, eight bowlers were used with the pick being Andy Bennett (2 for 12) and Tony Gipson (2 for 22).
