Open letter to all players and volunteers

STEEPLE LANGFORD CRICKET CLUB

To all Players, Parents and Volunteers

The new season is fast approaching so on the playing side of things we need to start getting ourselves fit and ready to go.  To help with this we have booked indoor nets at the Tollgate Centre, Tollgate Road, Salisbury with these taking place on 26th March, 2nd April and 9th April between 11 o/c and 1 o/c.  This is an excellent indoor facility complete with bowling machine and all players, including Colts, are encouraged to attend.

Once the season has started there will be regular coaching sessions for the Colts on a Wednesday evening for which the coordinators will send round further information shortly.  There will also be regular training and coaching sessions for the senior teams (including older Colts) on a Thursday night with these being more structured than in previous seasons.  Darren Harvey and Chris Mundy will coordinate these sessions with an external specialist coach being brought in to focus on a particular aspect of the game every few weeks.  Again, all players are encouraged to attend.

This season the second team is aiming to be more of a ‘development’ team and to encourage the transition between the Colts and senior cricket.  For too many years talented Colts have left the Club, many as a consequence of not getting the opportunity to move up into the senior teams.  We aim to address this by ensuring at least two Colts are picked for each second team match and we encourage the Colts (and their parents) to make themselves available when asked.

Last season there were occasions when we struggled to field a team in the seconds or on a Sunday resulting in the Captains having to make numerous frantic last minute phone calls.  We would like to avoid this situation this season so would encourage all existing players to make themselves available as often as they possibly can and to give early warning of their non-availability due to holidays or similar.

New players of all ages and abilities are always welcomed and we ask that everybody currently involved with the Club help to ‘sell’ it to their school mates, friends, work colleagues and neighbours.  Now is the ideal time to do this so that new recruits can attend the indoor net sessions and get to know the other players before the season starts.  We have the pleasure of playing for a very friendly Club in a wonderful setting which benefits from excellent facilities both on and off the pitch.  Our set up is the envy of many visiting teams so please help us to get this message out there and to pull in new players.

Of course, cricket is not just about the players.  We are always looking for coaches, umpires and scorers for which formal training can be provided if required.  Volunteers are also sought for other aspects such as assisting with teas and helping to maintain the pitch and the pavilion.  Please can you all consider how you may be able to help with this and to encourage anyone you know who may be interested to come forward.

Steeple Langford is a fantastic club to play for and with everybody’s help it can continue to develop and to prosper.  Let’s hope for a long hot summer!
